The Neo-Renaissance opera house opened in 1869. The first production presented here was Mozart's Don Giovanni, setting a high standard for future performances.
The Vienna State Opera became famous thanks to the efforts of such outstanding figures as Gustav Mahler. Under his direction, the theater became one of the best in the world, with a repertoire including works by Puccini, Verdi, and Tchaikovsky. Today, the stage features both classical works and modern operas. For example, Olga Neuwirth's opera Orlando became a landmark event – she was the first female composer whose work was staged at this theater.
The traditional Vienna Ball is another significant event, held annually in February. This event is part of UNESCO's intangible heritage and brings together top government officials and the world's elite.
